The Neighbors Market
What is The Neighbors Market?
The Neighbors Market is a pop-up seasonal market that takes place in food hubs across the North Shore in neighborhoods that face extreme food injustice. Our market puts the local food system back into Staten Island’s neighborhoods hands, and serves as an incubator for residents and local stakeholders to radically imagine long-term and sustainable solutions to food security and food access, going beyond direct services.
Our markets provide access to:
Fresh, local, and culturally-diverse produce
Cooking demonstrations for low-cost, seasonal, and healthy meals
Skills needed to be food secure such as gardening and seed demonstrations
Resources to combat neighborhood food injustices and its intersections using a community organizing approach
Frequently Asked Questions

This year’s Neighbors Market is focused on organizing neighbors and community members around transforming Hill Street Garden, into a community-owned resource. Hill Street Garden is a GreenThumb-operated garden and while it is a vital space in Stapleton, it is currently underutilized. The garden lacks a sustainable water system, long-term stewardship, and strong community involvement.
This is a unique opportunity for Stapleton residents to come together, learn the skills needed to restore the garden, and be part of building a collective effort to ensure gardens in Stapleton serve our community for years to come.

No, it’s free to enter!

We utilize a sliding scale system to create equity, so those who can afford to pay more do so, and those who cannot afford to pay as much, can pay less. When registering, individuals indicating they face food insecurity can receive produce for $5 or for free, while those who do not will pay $10.

Your purchase covers the costs of our garden bed right here at Hill Street Garden. Buying our produce helps us continue growing fresh food and in turn, you benefit from access to locally grown food. Together, we’re strengthening the local food system!
